Pioneering Education in Assam Since 1834<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Capt. Francis Jenkins<\/mark><\/strong>, the commissioner of Assam (1834-\u201961), was the first British official to send a dispatch to the \u201cGovernment of India\u201d in 1834<\/mark><\/strong> for \u201ctaking some active measures to provide instruction for the Assamese youth\u201d and recommended the establishment of schools \u201cto impart English education in four sadar stations \u2014 Gauhati, Darrang, Nowgong and Bishnath<\/mark><\/strong>\u201d. Jenkins also immediately collected a sum of Rs 1,740 from the inhabitants of Guwahati for the purpose of setting up an English school in the town, which had a population of about 5,800, including that of the North Guwahati.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
